Emotional Engagement Design

The methodology of Emotional Engagement Design comes in two parts. The first is what you design for, the second is what you work to eliminate to create a better experience for your audience.

The foundation of this methadology is the process of creating events that make people feel Safe, Important and Loved. These are three of the most fundamental human emotions that people spend their entire lives trying to achieve. We humans make every decision in our lives trying to create at least one of these feelings; job, location, relationships, hobbies, et al.

Now you can imagine what might occur if YOUR experience or event made people feel even of one these! Imagine if you made them feel a combination of all three across various moments at your event. It is a powerful recipe.

When you have created every part of an experience from communication to post-event follow-up with emotional engagement in mind, you can move on to the post-operative process of eliminating or compensating for any strong, negative emotional experience.

Now you will use your own empathy and self-empathy to imagine your way through the event you have designed, without prejudice, to deduce any moment where a human might feel Confusion, Frustration or Boredom.

These are the primary feelings that you need to avoid creating as much as humanly possible. These are major negatives that once they start piling up, will taint or completely ruin an attendees overall experience.

Identify any moment that may cause a person to feel Confused, Frustrated or Bored. Then work to eliminate or compensate for each of them so that your event creates such a sense of ease and flow that attendees are primed to absorb or behave in the direction of your highest ROI and KPI.
